Grade Points by Course
A University Grade Calculator (GPA Calculator) helps you calculate your Grade Point Average across multiple courses, weighted by credit hours. GPA is a standard measure of academic performance used by universities worldwide.
How GPA is Calculated
The formula for calculating GPA:
GPA = Total Grade Points ÷ Total Credit HoursWhere Grade Points = Grade Point Value × Credit Hours for each course.
Example: If you have:
- Math 101: A (4.0) × 3 credits = 12.0 points
- English 101: B+ (3.3) × 3 credits = 9.9 points
- Science 101: B (3.0) × 4 credits = 12.0 points
- Total: 33.9 points ÷ 10 credits = 3.39 GPA
Grading Systems
US Letter Grades:
A+ and A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, D- = 0.7, F = 0.0
UK Classifications:
First = 4.0, Upper Second (2:1) = 3.3, Lower Second (2:2) = 2.7, Third = 2.0, Pass = 1.0, Fail = 0.0
Percentage Grades:
Automatically converted to grade points: 90-100% = 4.0, 80-89% = 3.0, 70-79% = 2.0, 60-69% = 1.0, Below 60% = 0.0
Understanding Credit Hours
Credit hours represent the weight or importance of each course:
- More credits = More impact: A 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit course
- Standard courses: Most courses are 3 credits, labs are often 1 credit, major courses may be 4 credits
- Weighted average: GPA is a weighted average, not a simple average of grades
GPA Standards
Pro Tip: To improve your GPA, focus on courses with higher credit hours. Getting an A in a 4-credit course has more impact than getting an A in a 1-credit course. Also, retaking courses with low grades (if allowed) can significantly boost your GPA.
