A final grade calculator helps you determine what grade you need on your final exam to achieve your desired overall course grade, or calculate your final grade based on your final exam performance.

How to Calculate Grade Needed on Final

The formula for calculating the grade needed on the final exam:

Grade Needed = (Desired Grade × Total Weight - Current Points) / Final Weight

Example: If you have 85% (weight 50%) and want 80% overall, with final worth 50%:

  • Current points: 85 × 0.50 = 42.5
  • Desired total: 80 × 1.00 = 80
  • Points needed: 80 - 42.5 = 37.5
  • Grade needed: 37.5 / 0.50 = 75%

How Weighted Grades Work

Weighted grades assign different importance to different assignments:

  • Each grade is multiplied by its weight: Grade × Weight = Points
  • All points are summed: Total Points = Sum of all (Grade × Weight)
  • Divide by total weight: Overall Grade = Total Points / Total Weight

Example: 90% (weight 30%) + 85% (weight 20%) + Final 80% (weight 50%):

  • Points: (90 × 0.30) + (85 × 0.20) + (80 × 0.50) = 27 + 17 + 40 = 84
  • Overall: 84 / 1.00 = 84%
