How to Calculate Chronological Age
Determination of a person’s chronological age involves determining the exact time difference between that person’s date of birth and an established reference point. The concept is simple, although its calculation involves accounting for calendar quirks like leap years, varying month lengths and the switch from one day to another. This is the detailed method of obtaining the chronological age:
Step 1: Identify the Dates
There are two dates that you need: the birth date (which is the origin) and the reference date (for which you want to know how old somebody is). If no reference date is provided we use the current date as the reference date. One of the dates are to be proper calendar date and birth date should be before or on the reference date.
Step 2: Calculate Years
The initial step is to determine the temporal difference in years between the two dates. From the reference year, the birth year should be subtracted. This very first computation is only a transition as it does not take into account whether the birthday has already occurred in the reference year.
Step 3: Adjust for Months
After that, compare the months. In case the reference month is before the birth month, or if it is the same month but the reference day is less than the birth day, you will have to take away one year from your first calculation. Calculate the month difference then considering the year adjustment.
Step 4: Calculate Days
The days between the two dates are calculated. If the day date is earlier than DOB, you will have to 'borrow' days from last month. That means that you should subtract one month from the count and (+) add (the number of days in the last month to) days. For example, when computing difference between March 5 and April 3, you would have to subtract one month and then add the days in March (31) to get the true day count.
Step 5: Account for Leap Years
Leap years add an additional day (February 29) every four years, except for century years. Any calculation of total days or decimal age must take this into consideration. The usual method is to use 365.25 days per year on average, which thereby automatically accounts for leap years in decimal age calculations.
Step 6: Calculate Additional Time Units
Once you have the basic years, months, and days, you can calculate other time units:
- Total Days: Calculate the absolute time difference in milliseconds, then convert to days by dividing by the number of milliseconds in a day (86,400,000)
- Total Months: Multiply years by 12 and add the remaining months
- Total Weeks: Divide total days by 7
- Total Hours, Minutes, Seconds: Continue the millisecond conversion to these smaller units
- Decimal Age: Convert to decimal format using the formula: Years + (Months ÷ 12) + (Days ÷ 365.25)
Example Calculation:
Let's say someone was born on March 15, 1990, and we want to know their age on November 22, 2024. The calculation would proceed as follows:
- Years: 2024 - 1990 = 34 years (since November comes after March, the birthday has passed)
- Months: November (11) - March (3) = 8 months
- Days: 22 - 15 = 7 days
- Result: 34 years, 8 months, 7 days
For a more complex example where the day hasn't been reached yet: If someone was born on March 15, 1990, and we calculate their age on February 10, 2024:
- Years: 2024 - 1990 = 34, but since February comes before March, we subtract 1: 33 years
- Months: We need to account for the year adjustment. February (2) + 12 - March (3) = 11 months
- Days: Since February 10 is before March 15, we need to borrow from the previous month. January has 31 days, so: 31 - 15 + 10 = 26 days
- Result: 33 years, 11 months, 26 days
